Mary O. Mathews, 85, of Kellogg, died May 23, 2009, at Grinnell Regional Medical Center.
Funeral services are scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Thursday, May 28, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with the Rev. John Epperson, pastor of the Grinnell Christian Church, officiating. Burial will be in Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell.
Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday at Smith Funeral Home and where the family will be present from 6:00 to 8:00 Wednesday evening.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the donor’s choice in Mary’s name.
Mary was born May 23, 1924, on the family farm near Mt. Zion, Wisconsin, the daughter of John and Blanche Gray McDaniel. She was a 1942 graduate of Boscobel High School, Boscobel, Wisconsin.
On December 26, 1944, she was married to Floyd H. Mathews, in Boscobel. The couple lived in Madison and Muscoda, Wisconsin, and later returned to Boscobel, prior to moving to the Grinnell area in 1963 where they farmed for several years. The couple later moved to Kellogg and she was employed at Maytag Company in Newton for 18 years, retiring in 1986. Mary was a volunteer at the Senior Citizens Center in Newton and the Kellogg Historical Museum. She had been a resident of Windsor Manor in Grinnell since June of 2008.
Mary enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and attending all their activities. She enjoyed baking, particularly cookies, pies, and candy for family events. She also enjoyed traveling throughout the United States, working with ceramics, playing lots of different card games, and playing bingo.
Survivors include two children, Dennis Mathews of Rancho Cucamonga, California and Pam (Tim) Koellner of O’Fallon, Missouri; three grandchildren, Dennis Mathews and Chrystaunia (Jay)Duquette, both of Las Vegas, and Trisha Lewis (Tim) Quinn of O'Fallon; and three great-grandchildren, Matthew Duquette, Connor and Delaney Quinn. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Floyd in 1992; two grandchildren; and five brothers.
